Getting the Scoop on Electro-Sensors (ELSE)

We're trying to get the real scoop on Electro-Sensors, Inc. (ELSE), which we reported on yesterday in the 'Momentum Mover' section of the site as an ethanol play. Today others are discovering the stock and it is flying - up 65% to $10.74 in early action.

Here is our report from yesterday:

"Electro-Sensors (ELSE) Jumps As Ethanol Play04-25-2006 02:10:16 PM ET

Shares of Electro-Sensors Inc. (Nasdaq: ELSE) are jumping higher today (+21%) as an ethanol play. The company provides sensors and other devices to clients including Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (NYSE: ADM) and Cargill. According to a company representative, a significant portion of revenues come from a focus on the ethanol industry."

We have a call in with the company to get some better guidance on exactly how they are involved with the ethanol process and how much money they see from their focus on the hot sector.

Yesterday, a rep from the company said they make slidegates for Cargill as one example. On the company's website under the 'Industrial Speed and Vibration Monitoring Solutions' the company highlighted one of the industry served as Ethanol/Bio Fuels Processing, along with many others. The company rep directed us to a 2004 10K filing for more information, but we couldn't find anything in a quick scan.

We will get an update out when/if we get more information.

As mentioned in today's Trading Radar, the jury in the Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq: RMBS) patent infringement case versus Hynix returned for further deliberations today. Well, they've decided. The jury ruled that Hynix infringed Rambus' patents and awarded the company $306.5 million.

Rambus was halted before the news was released, last trading at $38.33 (-0.70%). Some have been expecting the stock to see a "buy the rumor... sell the news" reaction. We think this could go either way. The analyst at WR Hambrecht said a win would put Rambus in the driver's seat and put pressure on the rest of the DRAM industry to take Rambus's claims more seriously.

The stock is not yet indicated to open, but remember the first move may not be the correct move.

News this weekend that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) hired Steve Berkowitz away from IAC/InterActiveCorp's (Nasdaq: IACI) Ask.com division to head its online group could be viewed as a negative for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO).

Berkowitz has been credited with turning around Ask.com, which has grown its search business considerably recently. If he can do the same thing for Microsoft's MSN Search, market share gains for Google and Yahoo could be curbed.
